The priest may end up listening to the tough depending on how loyal he is to his particular leader, but in this case, the call was made to try an assassination attempt, which can only be done during night ours in the game. The camera can also zoom in onto the smallest of details. You can recruit church leaders, ex-military, dissident polticians, union organizers, gangsters, ect. When he did come out, the guards walked with him a little ways until the sniper took a shot. For example, while a mountainous city might have greater access to raw ore for refining, a city located near a forest would have industries that are more reliant on wood. At core you can say that Republic: The Revolution is a turn-based 2d game, accompanied by a good 3d engine. Republic's graphics are nothing to go crazy about, but in this type of title, they don't need to dazzle. You see, everybody in the game has the potential to influence others, so you have to figure out who is important and who isn't. The buildings looked pretty nondescript from that view, but when the camera zoomed in, you could see just how much detail was really involved in all of the facades and trees and people. You'll plan a rally for instance, but Hassabis wants to find a way to actually have you run the rally itself. Republic is certainly one of the most ambitious titles we've ever laid our eyes on, and if everything goes as planned, it promises to be one of the deepest hands-on political sims ever. Republic: The Revolution is a very linear game, but it offers a number of paths to take depending on the objectives, even if they all lead to the same goal. Gameplay-facilitating trainer for Republic: The Revolution. Republic's graphics are nothing to go crazy about, but in this type of title, they don't need to dazzle. Republic would quite probably work excellently as a well-implemented "spreadsheet" style game; the 3D element is worse than pointless, and just gets in the way of the gameplay… Republic: The Revolution was designed by prodigy Demis Hassabis, who first gained recognition at the age of 16 for his work on Theme Park with industry icon Peter Molyneux. Winning over the people is the way to eventually win the game. Have you played Republic: The Revolution? The question is, are they justified in doing so? As a strategy game, the 3D game engine is mostly a facade on top of simpler rules and mechanics reminiscent of a boardgame. We went to a bigger city and Demis fixed the camera on a park where people were beginning to gather. Gain enough followers and you'll be able to progress through the stages and eventually rule the country. The 10 most popular stories of the day, delivered at 5pm UK time. Up to sixteen factions, in addition to the computer-controlled president, are competing for power. Republic: The Revolution, is a 2003 political strategy game, where the goal is to Overthrow the fictional eastern european dictatorship of Novistrana. "They're sort of like character spells," said Hassabis. You'll begin the game controlling one of 16 towns in the Republic, and work your way up through the power ladder, moving your realm of control to one of four large cities, and finally to one large capital. This gameplay mechanic would, quite probably, work very well in a free-form environment - however, Elixir have chosen instead to lead you through the game by the nose, with a sequence of mission objectives which you must achieve. Not ones to back down, we hired a hit man to stake out the building across the street from where the priest lived. But when we say "small," we don't mean a town with a dozen or so people. For the sheer hell of it Hassabis had the hospital building made almost entirely out of curved surfaces. Sure enough, the next day the priest came out of his apartment, and the hit man let our "insurance policy" fly. A priest under the opponent's influence was staging soapbox speeches in the city center every day. But hey, at least we tried. The interaction with the priest and the tough generated a few just from that; the priest falling on the ground, pushing himself back up, getting in a headlock, the tough putting a hand up to his receiver to hear orders, and the list goes on. Hassabis points out that in a real life city there are probably two to three thousand powerful people that can, in turn, influence the general public, people like lawyers, police chiefs, and priests. It's certainly a game that you can get deeply involved with for several hours if you've got nothing better to do - but the extravagant claim that this is a game you'll be playing for the rest of your life is one we don't see any evidence for here. When he saw the priest rounding the corner with his bodyguards this time, he called off the hit man and waited for a more opportune time to make his move. Hassabis himself got stuck in one of the million polygonal trees and provided us with a convenient close up of the individual leaves that made up its foliage. A pan up to the rooftops showed a sniper waiting for the priest to emerge. The Totality engine should revolutionize the game industry -- just as the player plans to revolutionize Novistrana. Grand Theft Autocracy plus SimChe. Demis then loaded the scene up again and tried a different tactic -- a bribe. It's effectively a quite competent tabletop game translated into PC form - you can see heavy influences from something like Risk being thrown into the mix. The trials and tribulations of the Eastern bloc are soon to be brought to your computer screen when Elixir Studios finishes developing the strategy role-player Republic: The Revolution. It seems that they already have someone in mind but refused to offer more than the following tantalizing clue -- a "big name" has shown interest. If you love hardcore simulation titles like Master of Orion, then this political version of Championship Manager may be for you. All Rights Reserved. It’s part strategy game, part adventure game, part role-playing game, part wide-open elaborate 3D cityscape, part daytimer management sim. Such is the life of a world leader -- you have to make the right decision to fit the situation. It's on track for a Spring 2002 release, and we certainly hope it makes it, because we can't wait to get our hands on this one and rule Novistrana for ourselves. To recap, you play as one of 16 faction leaders all vying for control of an Eastern Bloc republic, fighting against one another while the president tries to stop all of you. And that's exactly what we saw. He missed the priest but killed a guard. I for one have been waiting at least five years to rule over a million people with an iron fist, especially after my botched coup attempt last year here in San Francisco, and it looks like Republic will finally give me that chance. Some will disagree, but we're of the opinion that a game which forces you to read the paper manual in order to proceed is inherently flawed. This is just one of the things that Hassabis has implemented that he thinks just wasn't possible when he first conceived the idea for the game. But since you don't run into any rival leaders until you reach the "city" stage, Demis didn't hang around the town for too long, and soon moved down the road to one of the cities. As you can imagine by now, this is going to be a very, very, very deep game that features political intrigue, economic stability, religious reaction, and military strong-arming. But one of the coolest things about the game isn't the large scale of controlling an entire country, but rather the small scale of influencing the one million individual citizens of Novistrana, who will each have their own unique and specific AI. file size 5.5 KB. In a top-down display Hassabis showed how four crowds made up of different factions navigated through one another to reach destinations chosen by him. When the priest looked to be resisting, the tough started to rough him up even more. Well, what better way to fight force than with a little more force? Defining the gameplay is the challenging, because you do quite a lot, and much can’t be compared to any other games. Republic: The Revolution is a real-time PC strategy game developed by Elixir Studios and published by Eidos Interactive in 2003. Well, we weren't about to stand for that, so Demis hired a tough to step and give the priest a lesson in butting-out where he's not welcomed. Your level of support among the people of a district (measured as a percentage) grants you a certain number of resource points from that district each day. The third and final stage of the game will see you going after the President of Novistrana in the capital city, the largest city in the game, with around 100,000 inhabitants. "Although Elixir is a game design focused company, we just happen to have some great technology," he says. Republic: The Revolution Info Game Title: Republic: The Revolution Release Date: 27 Aug 2003… Read More »Republic: The Revolution (2003) PC Game … But the advantage of being a leader that favors the extremes is that you'll attract people who are more fervent and loyal to your cause, and not as likely to switch sides if a rival leader makes a rousing speech or sends in troops to "stir up the pot" as the case may be. I was just googling the same thing myself when I came across this post. Some ignored him, some walked by, and some stopped and stood raptly while he was talking. The title has been kept secret by Demis Hassabis' studio for the better part of a year, but IGNPC managed to sit down with the man himself when he showcased the title in London. The priest walked out with a soapbox, plopped it down on the ground, climbed on it and started speaking. After that, they parted ways. Buildings are super-smooth and hyper-detailed. If you get heavily into games of Risk, then you may well enjoy Republic. "It's this way round. The first building showcased weighed in at 5 million polygons...and that was one of the small ones. This is what Hassabis refers to as "the easy stuff". PC games are safe. It is a depiction of grassroots political action, where one attempts to put their preferred government in power. You'll control a speech in real time, and what you do on the stage will directly affect how much the proletariat is influenced by you. When the priest got there, the heavy beat him up a bit to show him that we meant business. Tooltips are occasionally helpful, but are often downright cryptic or simply missing entirely from the controls. Through the use of these influences, you can coerce the denizens in your area to see things your way and adopt you as their leader, and work for you in converting others. Some people probably won't like this aspect of the game, but we felt that it gave the experience much-needed structure and a concrete set of goals to achieve - and to be fair, you are given a massive degree of freedom in between goals, and can go off and do whatever you like on the map before coming back and completing the objective in question. We also get to hear some cool things, even if a lot of the very technical side of things may fly a little over our heads. Legally. There are five, total: You can use whatever scheme you'd like to get to power, but as we all know, it takes more than some footwork to convince a million people to listen. Not only was the gameplay rigid and familiar, but it was damn near impossible to understand. That's still a ways off mind you, but we're willing to wait for another exercise in the power of good AI. If networking isn't your idea of thrilling gameplay, keep in mind that you aren't doing this in a vacuum. Republic is the result of lofty technical ambitions and sustained development delays. You can find people's strengths and weaknesses by tailing them, electronically bugging them, rummaging through their trash bins for info, raiding their homes or businesses for important documents, or simply being friendly to them and striking up a conversation. Your main goal in Republic is to influence people to join your faction, thereby making you the supreme ruler of Novistrana -- if you can influence enough people. It is set in Novistrana, a small, fictional, post-Soviet country in Eastern Europe. Unfortunately, as you can tell, a lot of the gameplay is theory at this point, but we should see some more definite information about the game in the coming months. This feeling is only enhanced by the fact that while the game is turn based (three turns a day, representing morning, afternoon and night), there's actually no apparent way to skip to the end of a turn - all you can do is speed up the clock fivefold, so if you're finished doing everything in a given turn, you still have to sit around until the end of that time period before doing anything else. That's when the fun begins. The demo of the AI showed an extremely early sample of the navigation system the citizens will use. Just how many of the outlandish claims made for Republic have turned out to be untrue - and stripped of the hype, is the game actually any good? Defining the gameplay is the challenging, because you do quite a lot, and much can’t be compared to any other games. Hang on, I hear you cry (this is a lie, but bear with me). However, don't be fooled by the screenshots or the hype; this is a slightly above average political simulation title which would have probably worked better as a board game than as a videogame, shackled down with a 3D engine that serves no useful purpose and is almost entirely non-interactive. The skill and the work in the game comes in learning what it will take to move a populace, person by person, to your side. The player will be able to explore these areas to leverage support for his faction. FYI, you can always move between cities and towns you control using rail or roadway systems, but it requires resources to travel. Something original. However, for an engine which has been under development for so long, there are some unforgivable bugs - in one early cutscene, the whole front of a building "pops" from being a single badly textured polygon into a full-resolution model while you're not more than 30 yards away from it, and many of the cutscenes and city zones in the game chug horribly even on a high spec machine (we tested Republic on an Athlon XP 1800+ system with a GeForce 4 Ti4600 and 1Gb of RAM - frankly we don't expect to see massive slowdown when the game puts five characters on screen at once on a rig like that). This is the stage where you'll run into your first challenge of power, as you'll go against other faction leaders who will try to wrest control of the city away from you. Like we mentioned in our earlier previews, Republic will be played in three stages. Fix a football match to obtain the goodwill of the local populace. Considering that the game is only hitting shelves in UK retailers today, it's quite amazing how much opinion among gamers is already polarised by Republic: The Revolution. Everything in the game will revolve around actions -- planning a rally, an assassination, a slander campaign, or just some scurrilous rumors will all take place through your key characters. Each city in the game is divided up into a number of districts, each of which has a unique set of values and demographics. "They'll go to work, pick up the kids from school, go shopping. Each section represents a different aspect of the game. Because the residents are all governed by a strong AI they'll go about their daily business as you play the game, and you'll be able to watch their actions, gauge their thoughts, and find out their political leanings in realtime. Tasks, people and vital locations are represented in icon form on top of a colourful map of the city districts, which also shows you your support levels and the activities of your enemies in each of the districts. Unlimited real-time light sourcing, self-shadowing, physically based models, a real physics engine authentic down to the flight of shrapnel in explosions; the list goes on. last update Monday, September 8, 2003. downloads 3978. downloads (7 days) 2 However, in this game all it serves to do is prove that Championship Manager has the right idea - if you're going to make a complex management simulation, give it an interface which is suited to handling masses of statistics and information in a competent way. Or as a criminal, you may have problems getting people to react to your ideologies. file type Trainer. Look out for more on Republic as work continues. Lesser visionaries would still think it was. Something original. All the major developments in the plot can be viewed in this manner and the normal people of the city will move through these scenes. As imaginative as the AI is, the jewel in the Republic crown will be the graphics engine. Although we only saw a very early build of the game -- and nearly unplayable except one very rudimentary level -- Republic is looking good for its money. But that isn't where it ends. The event will also make the country the revolution target, that alters gameplay beyond the government form. file size 5.5 KB. Based on an amalgamation of historical events in and around the former Soviet Union, the game thrusts you into the world of Eastern bloc architecture and politics. The other real problem here is the nagging feeling that Republic is a very simple game which has had layer upon layer of unnecessary complexity - both in terms of additional gameplay mechanics and hideously convoluted interface - have been heaped in order to make it all look more interesting. Republic: The Revolution. Demis opened up the demonstration in one of the towns in the game, zooming around the city streets and showing us the character models and the brown, bland tenement buildings you would expect in a typical Eastern Bloc town. You play a leader of a tiny political faction within the Republic of "Novistrana" (apparently "New Country" in Russian according to Hassabis, and we don't doubt him). If this is what the man was planning in his teens, one can only wonder what's in store for his twenties. Never miss a thing. Popular user-defined tags for … No, no...Republic is all about scale, so when you're in control of one of the small towns in Republic, you'll be seeing over about 10,000 unique individuals. As said in the reviews before the music is superb, and the actions are fun to watch and micro-manage. You spend practically the whole game in a zoomed out 2D mode, occasionally dropping in to the 3D city for a distressingly unskippable cutscene featuring badly animated characters speaking to each other in something that sounds like Russian recorded backwards (yes, there's no proper voice acting in the game), or to watch a special event in the game. The 3D engine provides a high level of detail and helps 'flesh out' the world of Novistrana, enabling players to take a virtual tour of their current location. The good news is that the gameplay seems concrete and easy to … The animations of the characters when interacting were pretty well done even at this stage and it looks as though there will be a lot of them. Once treated to a quick fly-past through and around one of Novistrana's cities the graphics should leave you picking your jaw up off the floor. PC games are safe. Because Elixir wants to save a few surprises for the release of Republic, Demis wasn't about to show us the capital city yet. The next day, we tailed him from his apartment, and he had an entourage of security guards around him, protecting him from any more beatings we may be handing out. It is a political simulator set in a fictional post-Soviet, Eastern European satellite nation called Novistrana. We're using the technology we have, which is in our opinion amongst the best in the world, if not the best, to free our minds, like my imagination and Joe [McDonagh]'s imagination to just run wild. One of the things Republic will be notable for is as the showcase for Elixir's Totality engine. Republic is going to be an incredibly open-ended game, offering you a wide range of choices in how you want to handle certain situations. For some core information about the game, make sure to check out our initial interview about Republic back in December of last year. We spent some time with Demis at E3 this year, and chatted with him about the current state of Republic's development, as well as the progress made on the beautiful Totality engine. If you click on one and make a purchase we may receive a small commission. and they may respond "I follow the rules of the land," implying that they aren't likely to be renegades. What this means is that each member of the population has their own life. The Revolution As a judge of the Revolutionary Tribunal, preside over complicated cases of ordinary citizens, dangerous criminals, and enemies of the revolution in revolutionary Paris. And this is only a simple -- but undoubtedly impressive -- demonstration of Republic's scope. It takes place in the small nation of Novistrana, a Ruritania that has just gained independence from the Soviet Union. The game opens showing you the current dictator of the country of Novistrana, and what horrible acts he commits against the populace, including giving an order to abduct your entire family. But how exactly do you get them to join your side? It's like going to a mixer, albeit one with a few more guns involved. While there wasn't a whole lot of gameplay shown here when all is said and done, it was enough to get us all pretty excited at the possibilities of the final version of the game. file type Trainer. Why haven't you fawned over the graphics yet in this review, eh? One of the most interesting titles that we've been following here at IGN for the last couple of years has got to be Elixir Studios' Republic: The Revolution. The town square centerpiece is a complicated globe-type design that Hassabis says he had created to test his engine to the full. Starting with a tiny base of support, you expand and nurture your political party until you can oust the president. gameplay ideas and subject matter, it’s a far cry from a revolutionary. We've been inundated with a slew of cookie-cutter first person shooters and real time strategy games for too long, and now it's time for something new. It's a system which takes a little bit of getting used to - and the game doesn't actually make it very obvious that this is how things work, unfortunately - but it's quite simple at heart and anyone who's played an even remotely complex tabletop game will settle into it with ease. All of this ties back into the engine, as you'll be able to see the effect you have on the city first hand. Working class districts, for example, tend to be Force districts; prestige business areas align to Wealth. Hassabis feels that there are three ways of getting people on your side (in the game, and in real life), and they are by ideology, financially, or by emotion. After shaking off the prettiness of it all, we got back to the meat of the matter to figure out exactly how the game will work. Thanks for taking part! While the premise of Republic is fairly easy to describe concisely, the gameplay is a bit more robust, to say the least. Republic: The Revolution has been added to Game-Debate but does not currently have the Republic: The Revolution system requirements. Too safe. I can't really find any that are in the same vain as republic but most paradox games have interesting diplomacy options, there's also "clout" a text based massively multiplayer Facebook congress simulator where you can do some interesting things, but sadly it seems pretty dead.. This trainer may not necessarily work with your copy of the game. Demis reloaded the hit man situation again to show us that, while you may hire someone to perform an action, you still have limited control of their actions. It is a depiction of grassroots political action, where one attempts to put their preferred government in power. After it released on 27 Aug 2003, it got millions of downloads all over the world. There are three basic resources in the game that you can use to influence the world: Alright, enough with this background crap, let's get on to what we actually saw in the demo. While the game is in its early stages, we were excited by some of the concepts brought up about the game, and the scope of the engine that he's trying to wrangle it all in with. Once you build up your web, you'll start to notice different colors appearing in the network -- those of the other factions. The concepts in Republic are beyond mind-blowing, and the technology behind the individual AI alone is a huge leap over anything we've ever seen in the past. But since I'm at the show, you can just go and take a look the previous preview to find out a bit more of the premise behind the game. The Revolution has a lot going on in it, so much so that I'm having a hard time determining its genre because the game doesn't stop throwing new mechanics at you.
